What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the mid- and lower abdomen, tightens separated or weakened rectus abdominis muscles, and repositions the remaining skin to create a smoother, tighter abdominal contour. Depending on the pattern of excess, the surgery may include liposuction of the flanks or upper abdomen to sculpt the waistline further.
A full (standard) abdominoplasty usually involves an incision across the lower abdomen (bikini line) and a second incision around the navel. Through these incisions, the surgeon can lift the skin flap and directly tighten the abdominal wall; the navel is then repositioned. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia in an accredited operating room and tailored to the extent of correction required.
