On the day of your procedure, our team in Albany will welcome you warmly and help you and your child get comfortable in one of our state-of-the-art treatment rooms. There, we will briefly review your child’s surgical plan and ensure all final questions have been answered.
Congenital ear reconstruction is performed under general anesthesia, allowing the child to sleep deeply and wake up with no memory of the procedure being completed. Once the patient is resting, Dr. Fournier will perform the surgery according to the treatment plan agreed upon during your consultation. He can perform autologous ear reconstruction using rib cartilage for children ages 6-10, or he can use MedPor for those as young as 3 years old.
With autologous reconstruction, Dr. Fournier will make incisions in the chest area to extract grafting material from several ribs. He will then use the cartilage to sculpt a precise, well-crafted ear framework, which is surgically inserted under the skin. Around 6 months later, the doctor will need to complete the next phase of the surgical process, raising the ear off the scalp to make it look natural and balanced. The earlobe may also need to be sculpted and refined.
With MedPor, a prefabricated artificial porous polyethylene framework, Dr. Fournier can reconstruct the ear without cartilage grafting, enabling the surgery for younger patients. The procedure does involve tissue and skin grafting, however.
